Scoliosis is a lateral (side to side) curvature of the spine. There are three types:
Congenital scoliosis which is present at birth
Neuro-muscular scoliosis which is caused by muscular disorders and diseases in the body that lead to poor muscle control
Idiopathic scoliosis, which is the most common type, is a lateral curvature of unknown cause
Some common symptoms of scoliosis are:
Lower back pain or Mid back pain
Shoulders appear uneven or hips appear uneven
An observed abnormal curve of the spine
An exam is typically performed to determine if there is a scoliosis including:
X-rays which determines severity and type
A test where you bend forward
Possibly an MRI
Headaches can be caused by a number of factors. The three most common types of headaches are tension headaches, migraine headaches, and cluster headaches. Many headaches such as tension headaches can be traced to the neck or cranial bone misalignments and tight shoulder and neck muscles. Fortunately, Timber Land Chiropractic has a number of answers for these types of headaches.
As a chiropractor, we always try to determine the cause of the headache through a thorough patient history, a complete chiropractic examination and cervical spinal x-rays if necessary. Many headaches can be related to auto injuries, sinus difficulties, stress, tension or any other neck-related symptom.
Tension and Neck Related Headaches: The nerves of the neck, when irritated can lead to head pain that travels from the neck to the top of the skull and around the ears or the forehead. Sometimes the pain can radiate into the face or eyes. These headaches can make it difficult to think clearly.
Whatever the type of pain you have, a thorough chiropractic evaluation will help lead you in the right direction. If at any time we feel that your headaches are caused by something that chiropractic treatment cannot help, you will be referred to the appropriate specialist.
Low Back Pain is one of the most common conditions treated at a chiropractic office. There are many causes of low back pain. Some of these causes occur during our activities of daily living. For example, many people notice lower back symptoms after performing a simple activity such as bending over to pick up a young child, brushing their teeth, or loading a dish washer. Moving awkwardly while sleeping, getting up from a seated position too fast, prolonged driving or prolonged sitting at the computer can also aggravate the lower back. Some of the more obvious causes of low back pain may come from lifting heavy boxes, working very long hours, swinging a golf club or shoveling too much snow.
Whether the causes are obvious or not, low back pain usually occurs from repetitive micro traumas to the spine. These micro traumas cause little irritations, that left untreated over a period of time, end up causing significant changes to our spinal structure, and in many cases, chronic low back pain.
A Chiropractic treatment typically consists of a chiropractic adjustment which helps to restore normal spine and nerve function to the affected areas and also helps to eliminate pain. Physical therapy and Physio-Therapy such as stretches, exercises, massages and electric stimulation are also utilized to help reduce muscle spasm and tightness as well as increase strength. Hot moist packs and ultrasound treatment are effective in increasing blood flow to chronic muscle spasms. Also, in acute low back cases, ice therapy (cryotherapy) is used to help reduce swelling and should be applied immediately following an injury. It is important in acute cases to avoid the use of dry heat therapy at home such as a heating pad on the lower back as this can cause increased superficial swelling and possibly additional pain.

Reducing symptoms – correcting the cause. A popular response to neck pain is taking drugs to cover up the problem (aspirin, analgesics, pain pills) or treating its symptoms (muscle relaxers, massage, hot packs). But neck pain isn’t caused by a lack of aspirin or drugs! The chiropractic approach to neck pain is to locate its underlying cause. This begins with a complete case history and thorough examination. Special attention is given to the structure and function of the spine, and its effect on the nervous system. Is the proper spinal […]
